Well hello 2013

I have a very strong feeling that 2013 is going to be the game-changer year. We have already been blasted with blessings that have filled our cup until it runneth over. Things have very suddenly become busier than ever for me, but the energy it has given me makes it all worth it and more.

Amidst all the recent busyness, Rod allowed me to leave the girls at home to go have lunch with the boys at school today. Why have I never done this before? (Well, I guess unemployment does have some benefits). It was such an amazing window into the life I am not witnessing when my boys go away to school all day. I entered the lunch room to mingle with hundreds of 1st and 2nd graders and left feeling so appreciative for all those energetic little bodies and capable little minds. They were so cute and so full of light. I wanted to squeeze every single one (especially the ones who looked lonely) and tell them what a bright spot they were in the world.

Milo might have as well been king because kids never ceased to bring him treats or tell him secrets as they look on for approval, beg to sit next to him and offer him their number for play dates. I don't think he has even a clue how many look to him as a leader, but truly he was born to get others' attention. He never stops talking and is always comparing the outside world to the inside world of science he is so curious about. His desire to do the right thing dominates many of his choices of late, and I've noticed a huge soft spot for me, to which I hope I never EVER take for granted while it lasts. How many years do I have of his tight hugs and spontaneously offered kisses? He is so young and so old at the same time. This makes my heart flip when I see him from afar.

Elliot was on the other end of the spectrum. Not a lonely child but quietly connected with the cutest group of little boys you ever saw. He is not a man of many words and does not put much effort into reaching out but he is kind and sensitive and enjoys boy conversations and funny tricks like any other boy would. Occasionly he gets brave enough to show his tough wild side. Everyone talks louder than him and he doesn't seem to mind, but I think he wishes he knew how to join groups that haven't discovered his offerings yet. He still begs to be tucked in every night and is scared of the dark. And unfortunately that kids' fluterring eyelashes and big sparkly eyes can make me do anything he asks, even if he's been a stink. The soft spot I have for him is as tender as his own heart and he is ALWAYS the first one to help his sibling when they are sad and wants to give away anything he has ever own if he senses a need. That kid. Oh I love that kid.

Flora is in a league of her own. I remember so clearly the feeling of every dream of mine coming true when she was born and she has not let us down... nor let us breathe a single breath of our own since that day. She dominates every scene, every demand, every moment of my life unless she's sleeping (which is why she is still requred a full two-hour daily nap). She drives us all batty with her demands, which is why she is nick-named our Little Wedge--no one can get a hug, read a book, eat a snack, or have a private moment without her squeezing her self in the middle and demaning a piece of whatever we have or are doing. Although, she loves doing dishes, coloring, cooking, cleaning and pretty much anything the boys never really like to do. It's amazing how different they come into this world and she is a bright spot in all of our days with her smile and spunk. I can't live with her and I can't live without her--it's a good situation.

Juniper. Oh, Juni. I could write a sonnet every day for the rest of my life and never touch the tip of the iceberg of my love (obsession really) for that baby. If ever I have a spare moment, I relish in the time I get to spend playing with her. I could waste hours trying to get her to laugh and smile, which is not all that difficult. She is happy. She is fat. She is easy to please. She naps awesome. She hates getting her diaper changed, which after four babies, it's cuter than it is annoying. She bites me when I nurse her and laughs, and then after I cry I laugh too. She is so fat she can't crawl beyond a snails pace. She eats anything and everything. She loves to burry her face in my body. Can you say favorite child? She is happiness and pure joy rolled in a coating a bliss and sprinkled with so much sweetness I could chew on her forever. How's that for sappy? I figure if she's my last baby, I am allowed to love her guts harder than is healthy. That's my job and I know all too well the Wonder Years are numbered and fading WAY too fast.

Rod is dilligently looking for a job and come the first of February it will have been four months that we have somehow survived without stable income. The only way I can describe our existence is by miracles and more miracles. We have been lifted, supported, inpsired and encouraged by loving family and friends and this is how we have recognized the hand of God in our lives. This opportunity to feel love and grattitude at the degree we consistently do for others these last few months, is not only humbling but incredibly rewarding. It has given us experiences that we will benefit from for the rest of our lives and hopefully go on to pass that flame when we are able. I know there are more miracles waiting for us and I hope we can do them justice. I am learning to praise God in the form of being an instrument to serve, as others have done for us.

Baptism Boy

Besides the fact that I've spent the previous three days with yucky flu-like symptoms, yesterday was a really great day. We had a lot of friends and family show their support to our family for Milo's baptism and it made the day so special. It was also the exact day I got baptized 21 years ago.

He asked his uncle Tom to give a talk (one which I think Milo even listened to!) and I sang with the mother of the other little girl getting baptized (which was probably the first time in years). It was really awesome to sit back and experience the love and support that I felt in that room. I think it left a positive impression on him and certainly did for me.

Milo is a good boy with a good heart and a keen mind. He is capable of so many good things and tries really hard to do what is right. We are proud of the person he has become and my personal hope is to keep discovering all his good qualities and earn his trust through his tween and teen years...because they are approaching quicker than we know how to prepare for them!  We love you so much, Milo Beck!

His enthusiasm for scouts is really really adorable too. (That is his uncle's old scout shirt;)

Milo Turns Seven!

Today is the first day of Fall Break. Despite my monumental effort and planning to have a few super fun days while my kids are home all day (I've been so excited!), it's been a really really tough start. You know just normal mom-things that waste you before the day begins like peeing accidents, lots of messes made during our house-cleaning session, way too many nasty poopy diapers, teasing and gobs of wasted energy on my part... but alas, the day is not over yet. Do you think I can survive taking the kids biking in the mountains?

This picture may describe our earlier mood a bit better:

In better news, the weather has been so incredibly perfect, it's almost impossible to stay down for long. In fact, besides a few days during Jess' wedding weekend (dang), the weather has been absolutely divine for a good 8-10 weeks. And before that it was just the normal hot summer days! I do believe Utah has a solid 9 months of amazing weather and if the winter weren't so dang hard for me I don't think I'd appreciate the rest nearly as much. So, Winter? I kinda-maybe-even like you too.

Anyways, on to the point of this post:
Milo turned seven on Saturday and for me, it was a pinch-me-please! kind of day. We spent the entire day together doing various family activities like riding our bikes up the insanely colorful Provo Canyon on the trail and attending a BYU hockey game, among several others. No whining, no fighting, just 12 hours of Pure Grande Family Fun. It's so amazing to get gold nuggets like this every once in a while and I hope it is not soon forgotten--it makes the 100 hard days before worth it.

Milo is such an amazing boy with an incredible ability to rebound from all the mistakes his parents I make while trying to figure this whole "parent thing" out. He has so many natural abilities and gifts and has brought us unspeakable amounts of joy these last seven years. I tell you, that boy has saved me in so many ways I can't begin to count. I keep discovering new things about his strengths and out-going personality every day and am constantly amazed by his awesomeness. Although it's hard to see your first child so rapidly out-growing childhood, I know Milo will blaze a path that was beyond anything I could comprehend at his age. Thanks for coming to us, Milo-Boy, and Happy Birthday!

Cutest School Pictures Ever Seen

Grandparents...they'll be in the mail soon...

Friday, October 15, 2010

Nothing says "It's time to get up!" like 3 dozen balloons waiting to be blown up before the king awakes.

Birthdays are special around here.
We're off to play hard, eat good, and make great memories together today.

Happy Birthday Miloboy!
Six years already?!

Off to College Tomorrow, I Suppose

Kindergarten is no big deal. Three hours a day, five days a week. I'm cool with that.

On the flipside, Kindergarten is sort of a big deal. The end of a beginning; the beginning of an end. I'm pretty sure my eldest just grew 5 inches this week and I'm not cool with that.

Their first day kind of hurt, down deep, but there were no tears...I'm saving those for next year. Now I'm stuck with trying to figure out a new sleeping schedule for Flora, because it's been screwed with and I'm not sure there's an easy solution. Until then, things feel a little skiwampus around here.

I'm afraid Elliot takes more after me: I had to literally drag him through the door.

He was more nervous than I thought he'd be, which surprised me. Can you see it in his face?

 Adorable neighborhood friends starting together.

After school.

According to Two Preschool Boys...

(May 2008 Seaside, OR)

Freshly made beds are for jumping on and climbing into.
Brand new pants are for crawling on pavement and sitting in gravel.
Squeeky clean church shoes are for digging in backyard mudpiles.
Gorgeously-matte-finished pianos are for squirting entire tubes of super glue across, throwing metal hangers on, driving Hot Wheels down and whipping with sticks.
Newly budding branches are for swinging on.
Roofs are for having picnics on.
Windows are for throwing things out.
Permanent markers are for drawing on furniture.
Tape is for dispensing on anything in sight until empty.
Countertops are for drumming with sharp objects.
Kitchen tables are for poking holes in with ball-point pens.
Kitchen tools & utensils are for use in sand boxes.
Cabinets are for sawing on with knives.
Walls are for drawing & coloring your favorite family members on.
Folded laundry is for frisbeeing across the room.
Fluffed couch cushions are for building forts out of.
Banisters are for climbing on and "parachuting" off of.
Carpet is for wiping off tar-chunks accumulated on barefoot feet from newly paved roads.
Scissors are for cutting hair and little tiny fingers.
Anything new, important-looking, or just cleaned is for touching, dirtying and ruining.
Holes in anything are for ripping bigger holes.

This is not to say I don't see the value in appreciating boys being boys...
I look forward to the day when I will be laughing at this list, but first I need to go spend some alone time in my closet.

A Small Window Into Their World

Milo has lots of ideas, and Flora? she does tricks.

Untitled from Jourdan Boynton on Vimeo.

And where is Elliot you may ask? Oh, only roaming the neighborhood alone, peeing in people's yards, eating their food and choosing that deliberately over the option of dinner/dessert/FHE. If there is a solution to 3-year old defiance, please let us know! Meanwhile, we'll just be over here pulling out our hair.

And I quote...

Milo: I like all of these things in the car (transformer toys, lego ship, treasure box, etc...) except you.

Mom: [Dirty look in Milo's direction]

Milo: Except means, I LOVE you!

Mom: Oh.

Milo: But you still do some bad things sometimes... but you're a good cook, and you make me smoothies. I LOVE smoothies.

..............................................

Dad: Elliot, don't stick that in the socket or you'll get hurt!

Elliot: No! I'll get POWER...in my BRAIN!

 ........................................................

I was reading through some old blogs and this one in  particular stood out to me. I have been dreading the day Milo starts "real school" and am trying to hold as tight as I can to these days: the days that I have them all day, starting in my bed and our kitchen, to our backyard and then in my arms. I love these days. I love my life. And...I love my kids more than words could ever say. I could never be complete without them.
How did I get so lucky?

Nature Time

Most of these pictures were taken about a month ago; fall is on it's way out and winter is officially setting in. Thank goodness Utah is fickle about making up its mind though. We've got a few days of warm weather to look forward to still.

Our favorite pass-time for maximum energy expenditure sans home-destruction, is a nice long Nature Walk. The days we get out are our very best days. We find lots of great treasures to entertain us around here. And since they just finished paving a new bike trail right next to our house and neighborhood, this makes it most convenient for a place the boys can just be boys. We are SO excited about having this close to our home and we've been racking up the Good Times already. Do I have to mention again that I think we live in an incredibly beautiful place?
